The sudden disappearance of Kayla at the age of 9 broke her father’s heart and disrupted his life.
Today, at the age of 15, and despite all the odds, the missing girl has been found, and her story gave us chills.
In 2017, Kayla was taken away by her non-custodial mother, Heather Unbehaun.
In an interview two years after her disappearance, Kayla’s devastated father, Ryan, noticed that the mother “was supposed to have the child every other weekend.”
Ryan remembered that Heather “had taken Kayla that weekend before the Fourth of July, and the Fourth of July, I believe, fell on a Tuesday.”
So, Ryan suggested extending Kayla’s stay with her mother, who would keep her from Monday to Tuesday, and then he would pick her up on Wednesday.
When Ryan arrived on Wednesday to pick up his daughter,
the Unbehaun family told him that the mother and daughter had not returned from their camping trip.
Someone identified Kayla at a mall, and the girl was brought home by her father, six years after her disappearance.
The 40-year-old mother is currently detained by the police. The joyful father shared that he is “overjoyed” that his daughter “has returned home safe and sound.”
He also thanked the followers of the Facebook page “Bring Kayla Home” for keeping their story alive.
Finally, the father emphasized: “We ask for privacy as we get to know each other again and navigate this new beginning.”
